Our
Foray into NASCAR… The start of the NASCAR Camping World
East Series is just a few weeks away. This regional touring series
based on the East Coast is known for its close, competitive racing
and has become the stomping grounds for up-and-coming NASCAR stars
both behind the wheel and on pit road. Austin Dillon, will make
his first-ever NASCAR start in the #3 Garage Equipment Supply
Chevrolet on April 19, 2008 at the famed Greenville-Pickens Speedway
in Greenville, South Carolina. We are proud to be a part of this
historic event and are eager to see everyone's hard work pay off.
ASM's owner, Andy Santerre, was impressed with Austin's first
laps on asphalt as well as in a full-size stock car, “Austin got
up to speed pretty quickly for a driver with limited experience
in these heavier racecars. He was running times equal to last
year’s top runners in less than five laps. He definitely has the
talent.”
Austin Dillon's driving talent comes naturally as the grandson
of the legendary Richard Childress. Dillon makes his first ever
start for start for Garage Equipment Supply at the famed Greenville-Pickens
with the hopes of bettering his Grandfather’s racing success at
the same track.
“My grandpa raced at Greenville when it was a dirt track,” Austin
Dillon remembers with a smirk on his face, “He raced really well
there, but told me that one time he ended up tearing the fence
down.”
No one is more excited about Austin's first start than his proud
Grandpa.
Just last month in the driver’s compound at the Daytona 500 we
were in the RCR coach discussing the upcoming season with various
RCR insiders when a story was told about Austin taking the checkered
flag at the Dirt Track at Lowe's Motor Speedway in Charlotte NC
the past fall. Not one of the 14,000 in attendance were using
their seats as the black #3 car crossed the finish line. No one
was more proud of Austin than his Grandpa, who was said to have
worn the the biggest smile ever seen on Childress’ face. He is
by far the greatest fan of both of his grandson’s Ty and Austin,
and their success means the world to him.
On April 19, with a nod to the past and his eyes on the future,
Austin will take the green flag and begin his own journey to NASCAR
stardom. Good luck Austin! We’re behind you all the way!
